Tips all Pregnant Women Need to Follow During Monsoon

If you are pregnant during monsoon, you need to be very cautious of infections.
Monsoon is a season full of maladies. If you are pregnant, you need to be even more careful during monsoon. Monsoon is one of the most loved seasons in India. The thundering sky, heavy rains, making paper boats, and wearing raincoats, everything related to monsoon brings back happy memories. But, during pregnancy, monsoons can be quite an uncomfortable season. The gloomy and humid weather may bring frequent mood swings as well as chances of infections or communicable diseases.
Here are some tips shared by him that you must follow:

1) Vaginal hygiene is of utmost importance. Pregnant women are very prone to fungal infections. One needs to wear cotton undergarments, change them two times a day and you can use a vaginal wash- at least 2 times a day, especially after using a washroom. If there is a curdy white discharge, especially foul smelling, you should visit an obstetrician.

2) Drink boiled water and ensure that the water is boiled for at least 10 minutes after the water starts boiling. This will kill all the germs. This water can then be cooled and drunk. It ensures better safety than any filtered water. During monsoons, a pregnant lady is more prone to infections especially water-borne diseases.

3) Diarrhoea, jaundice, typhoid can be avoided by not eating outside food. Food should always be covered. Avoid flies-infested food. Always wash your vegetables and fruits before eating.

4) During monsoons, dengue fever, chikungunya infection and malarial infection, caused by mosquito bites are common. A pregnant woman should use caution against mosquito bites. Mosquito nets and repellents can be used. You must also avoid stagnation of water in your surroundings. Any fever should be followed up with your obstetrician.

5) Any infection during pregnancy poses a grave danger to the mother and the fetus. Pregnant women can get themselves immunized with the influenza vaccine. This will protect the mother against common cold and the more important and threatening H1N1 infection. This will also protect the newborn for the first 6 months of life. This vaccine is prepared every year with the ever-changing strains of the influenza virus, hence it needs to be taken every year. A dose of vitamin C daily would also help to build up your immunity.

6) Sanitise your home
Collected water is a breeding site of mosquitoes, flies etc. Clean your home every day with disinfectant and look out for flower pots, corners, washrooms to avoid collection of muddy water. Taking care of the area around you and keeping it free from infection is an important aspect to be kept in mind as well. Using a nice-smelling soap solution for cleaning the home isn’t sufficient. Replace that with a strong disinfectant that can rid your home of any microbes or germs that stay even in the darkest corners. Take care to wash and replace your beddings and other upholstery regularly since visitors and other guests can bring germs along with them from the outside.

7) Make Bathing a Time for Disinfection
Once a day, make sure you take a bath that contains disinfectants. This reduces the chances of microbes and infections staying on your body for long and finding their way inside you. Using neem with hot water or even a cap of Dettol with hot water can not only give a relaxing bath but make you feel clean and healthy, too.

8)  Mosquitoes are Your Worst Enemies
There are few people who are lucky in this world to stay at a home that is free from mosquito invasion. Most of us have to be at war, especially in monsoons, when mosquitoes enter our homes en masse. Using a mosquito repellent is the first line of defence but do not shy away from using a liquidator as well. Using nets over your beds can help you get a good sleep at night. Keep a watch around your home and in the surroundings for places where stagnant pools of water might remain. These breeding grounds of mosquitoes should be taken care of or should be avoided as much as possible.

9) Stay Hydrated
Dehydration is a common problem of pregnancy in monsoons. To stay hydrated you must drink water regularly. Make it a habit of drinking purified or boiled water daily and around 2 to 2.5 liters. It may also relieve you from headache, nausea, fatigue, or dizziness, etc. Carry a water bottle whenever you step out of the house or else opt for juices packed in tetra packs or coconut water.

10.) Wear Right
Humidity and excessive sweating can make you uncomfortable during monsoon, but there is a way to tackle this uneasy situation. Try wearing loose and light weighted clothes during monsoon as it is necessary to give full comfort to your baby bump. Also avoid wearing synthetic clothes as it may cause rashes. Never walk around barefoot or in rubber soled footwear in monsoons as they may cause slipping and falling. Thus, opt for footwear which isn’t slippery and is more comfortable and supportive

11) Be Careful with Non-Vegetarian Food: You should be extra careful with non-vegetarian food, especially seafood, during monsoon. Pregnant women must eat properly cooked or barbecued food as roasting kills most bacteria.

12) Boost Your Immunity with Appropriate Nutrition:

A mother has to eat for two — for herself, and for her baby. However, you should not be eating just about anything and everything. Rather, it should be protein rich without being too dependent on dairy products. Foods that boost your immunity like fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and micro nutrients should be part of daily diet. Soups, chicken broth, whole grains; healthy fats like olive oil; fish like sardines, mackerel; oatmeal; flax, pumpkin, sesame, sunflower, fenugreek, and fennel seeds; bitter gourd, and lean meats should be part of your daily diet. Since some women develop pregnancy diabetes, all food should be evaluated for nutritive value. Go easy on high carbohydrate content food, though potatoes boiled in their jackets are always a good food to have.

13) Eat and Drink Foods Rich in Vitamin C and Iron:
You need to ensure that the food you are eating, and the drinkables you imbibe boost your immunity, and avoid allergies. Apples — freshly cut with their skin, lightly stewed with some lime juice, or juiced; grapes, fresh grape juice; orange pieces or juice; avocados, cherries, plums, pears, peaches, blackberries (kala jamun), bananas, and pomegranates should figure in your regular diet. The rule of thumb is to have at least three kinds of fruits daily during pregnancy to ensure that you get your share of nutrients and build your immunity. Since you become more susceptible to viral fevers and various infections during the monsoons, such fruits help you as long as you don’t have fruit which was cut in the market, or left out in the open for a long time since they might have been contaminated. These might easily become a source of infection, and you definitely don’t want to risk indigestion, diarrhea, stomach flu, typhoid, or hepatitis. Spicing up your food with ginger, garlic, turmeric, and apple cider vinegar might help in overcoming allergies.

14) Always remember “precaution is better than cure”
Pregnancy, constrain you from all the things you could have done by yourself. Therefore, it is better to take precautionary measures into an account for possible unpleasant scenarios and prepare for them. For example, while you are stepping out of your home, always carry an umbrella and make sure your phone is charged. Carry a power-bank if needed. Check for weather updates regularly and avoid going out during times when showers are predicted.

15) Remember to consult your doctor:
Remember to consult your doctor before using any mosquito repellent cream, since some of the chemicals will permeate the skin and reach the bloodstream. Similarly, burning a fast card is not recommended, as you would be inhaling the smoke and the harmful chemicals too.
